Who we are

The D.I. is an independent editorial comparison guide, live first for Australia and built to travel. We list designer originals beside independent fragrances that sit near the same profile, then send you to a merchant who actually sells the bottle. We are not a perfume shop, not a grey-market seller, and not affiliated with the designer houses we name. We do not manufacture, stock, import, or sell perfume. We do not take payment for a place in the index.

What a dupe is here

A dupe, inspiration, or alternative on this site is a fragrance sold under its own brand and its own name. It is not a counterfeit, not a fake label, not a tester of the original, and not a grey-market refill of the designer juice. If a listing ever looks like a fake, it does not belong here.

Names, marks, and bottles

Designer house names and perfume names appear, as plain text, so you can tell which original an inspiration is being compared with. That is comparison, the way a critic names a vintage. It is not a claim that we are those houses, that they endorse us, or that the inspiration is the original. All trade marks stay with their owners. So you can tell which bottle is being compared, each original is shown with a product photo of the designer bottle from a retailer or the brand's own shop, credited to that source. We never draw, restyle or AI-generate designer bottles, labels or logos, and we never use designer campaign imagery.

Pictures

A bottle pictured on The D.I. is the house's own photograph wherever the house has published one, credited to that house. Where a house has no photograph we can use, the picture is an AI illustration made by The D.I. and is labelled “AI illustration — not the actual bottle”. House photographs that have had their background edited with AI are labelled too. Each house page is dressed in that house's colours so you know whose shelf you are on; the colours are ours to change the moment a house asks. If you own a picture shown here and want it changed or removed, write to the desk and we will act within two business days.

Scores, prices, and notes

Match percentages, desk scores (the stars out of 5), wear times, sillage, and value scores are editorial estimates from this desk. They are not laboratory assays and they are not a promise that an inspiration will smell the same as the original on your skin. Desk scores and desk notes are written by The D.I.. They are not independent consumer reviews, not ratings by customers, and not verified purchases; no review counts are shown because there are none. An alternative's notes are shown only when its house publishes them. Typical AUD prices are street figures to compare tickets — not live checkout. Always read the merchant’s checkout. Stock, shipping, and the price you pay are the merchant’s, not ours.

The D.I. (The Dupe Index) is owned by Westbarn Pty Ltd. Some shop links are commission links: if you buy through one, The D.I. may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Inspirations are listed top-rated first — by the house's own customer reviews where its product page shows them, otherwise by our desk score; where ratings tie, houses we work with come first. As an Amazon Associate, The D.I. earns from qualifying purchases. Match bands are desk estimates, not lab tests. Designer bottle photos are retailers' product photos, shown for identification. The D.I. is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the designer houses it names; their trade marks are used only to describe what an independent fragrance was inspired by.

Commission programmes live today: Amazon Associates (AU). Every other shop button is a direct link and pays The D.I. nothing. On perfume pages inspirations are listed by desk score, highest first; in search, by the house's own customer reviews (read from its product page; 5 or more reviews rank first), then desk score. Where ratings tie, alternatives from houses we have a commercial relationship with come first. Shop reviews are the house's own; The D.I. does not collect, check or edit them. Commission links are listed first where more than one shop sells the bottle. A commission never changes the price you pay.

Clicking a shop button leaves this site for a third-party store with its own terms. If a merchant later confirms a purchase from that link, we may record a sale count (shop and amount only).

Using the site

Use The D.I. for personal, non-commercial reading. Do not scrape the catalogue to run a copy of this index. Do not present our pages as if you are the designer house. We may correct, hold, or remove a listing when a photo, claim, or offer is wrong.

Privacy

This version does not ask you to create an account. Saved bottles and compare lists live in your browser. Shop clicks are logged in that same browser so the operator can see which hop you took; they are not a customer database. When you follow a shop link, the merchant (Amazon, eBay, a brand shop) handles the purchase under their own privacy notice. For the full note see Privacy.
